How to convert the cost of a diamond priced in American Dollars?
Banks & Credit cards are like Bureau de Change in they have a buy rate and a sell rate for currencies, which is usually a 5% difference. Therefore take the current dollar rate and multiply by 0.95 to give a buy dollar rate.
Most Internet companies will charge at lease USD $100.00 for Shipping and Insurance (if they have insurance).
When importing into UK customs charge import duty of 5% if the diamond is set.
When importing into the UK Customs will charge VAT on:
a) the cost of the diamond
b) the 5% duty
c) the cost of shipping
There will also be an administration fee, which can be up to £25.00.
Customs will also use their own exchange rate, which may be less than the actual rate you received when you purchased, if the rate they use is less it is not negotiable.
Therefore, based on a current United States Dollars exchange rate of $1.80 to the British Pound; USD $1,000.00 worth of diamond will actually cost you:
$1,000.00 + $100.00 shipping divided by 1.71 (1.8 x 0.95) = £643.27
£643.27 x 1.05 Import Duty = £675.44
£675.44 x 1.175 VAT = £793.64
£793.64 plus £25.00 admin. fee £818.64
Therefore the true cost to you of a USD $1,000.00 diamond is actually £818.64. An easy way to convert to find a UK pound price is multiply the dollar price by 82% (based on a current USD exchange rate of 1.80).
